  • Originally meaning a single-room shop for the sale of goods and services, tabernae were often incorporated into domestic dwellings on the ground level flanking the fauces, the main entrance to a home, but with one side open to the street.
  • Bairro do Avillez has four spots to choose from.
  • According to the Cambridge Ancient History, a taberna was a "retail unit" within the Roman Empire and was where many economic activities and many service industries were provided, including the sale of cooked food, wine, and bread.
  • As urbanization continued to increase rapidly, the need for tabernae did as well.
  • The warm atmosphere of this place makes visitors feel relaxed and have a nice time.

Our favorites from the appetizers were the fried kaltsounia (small pastries) filled with cheese, crisp and golden, drizzled with honey, which disappeared from the plate very quickly. The homemade tzatziki and tirokafteri (spicy cheese spread) are ideal with the establishment ̓s delicious French fries – thin, crispy and almost caramelized, they recall the kind you would typically find in a French bistro. It was also thanks to the refugees that traditional Anatolian side dishes, such as soutzoukakia (spicy meatballs) and moussaka, ended up on the menu. The wine was served with some easily prepared dishes, including small fried fish or chicken stomachs, also fried.

We try them all – places both bold and familiar – because we have a good appetite, but we put our trust in those spots where we get the warmest reception. And while Porto’s charm lies in its unpretentiousness, it’s easy to fall into tourist traps masquerading as authentic experiences. And even though some spots have reinvented themselves, the food they put out continues to comfort our stomachs. The house wine is served in low glasses, the lemonade according to Portuguese tradition, and the snacks are always split up, after all, the Portuguese like to share!

Thus, the menu offers typical Andaluz dishes which aren’t as commonly found throughout Madrid. This trendy newcomer might not feel as authentic as some of the more old-school tabernas, but Patio de Leones is there for when you’re looking to impress with elevated tapas with bright, gorgeous ambience! But most of the menu consists of elevated versions of typical pub grub which you’re unlikely to find outside of Patio de Leones. The taberna has a great menu of mouthwatering and heartwarming dishes that truly taste homemade.

Sometimes, an elevated wooden platfrom (inspect) would be installed within the taberna chamber to increase usable space, as seen in one of the wine shops in ancient Herculaneum. These kind of tabernae would often had rooms above or to the back of them for storage, production, or habitation.
